Puri,
sometimes called Jagannath, town, eastern India, in Orissa State,
on the Bay of Bengal. It is a seaport, resort, and market center.
Its industries include handicrafts, fish curing, and rice milling.
In the town is a 12th-century temple erected in honor of the Hindu
god Vishnu, under his aspect as Juggernaut. Puri is the site of
an annual festival attended by thousands of Hindu pilgrims in
honor of Vishnu. Population (1991) 125,199.
