02/ Bodhgaya
Bodhgaya is one of the sacred places for the Buddhists as well
as for the Hindus. Here under the Bodhi Tree, Gautama attained
supreme knowledge to become Budhha, the `Enlighted One'."The
Buddha once lived here"Lord Buddha the gentle colossus who
founded the first universal religion of the world, worked and
lived much of his life in Bihar though he was born in Kapilavastu,
now in Nepal.
Most of the major events of his life, like enlightenment and last
sermon happened in Bihar. Significantly. the state's name originated
from 'Vihara' meaning Buddhist and Jain monasteries, which abounded
in Bihar.
Early morning visit the Mahabodhi Temple for the prayers and meditate
near the Bodhi Tree. Return to your hotel for breakfast. Later
visit the Sri Lankan monastery. Later in the day visit the village
of Sujata, which is where a woman with the same name gave Lord
Buddha his first meal ( milk & rice pudding ) after he came
out of the austerities he was performing and broke his fast. Visit
the Mahabodhi temple for the evening prayers too. Night stay in
Bodhgaya.
Day 03/ Bodhgaya - Rajgir & Nalanda - Bodhgaya
Visit the famous ancient university of Nalanda, which produced
great masters like Guru Padmasambhava and then after a short drive
visit Rajgir, where exists the Vulture's Peak or Giridhrakoot.
Visit the Japanese Shanti Stupa in Rajgir.
RAJGIR - The Buddha lived in the sixth century BC. Mahavir was
born in 567 BC and the traveller in Bihar will encounter them
both constantly. Rajgir is 10km south of Nalanda and sacred to
the memory of the founder of both Buddhism and Jainism. Lord Buddha
spent many months of retreat during the rainy season here, and
used to meditate and preach on Griddhkuta, the 'Hill of the Vultures'.
Lord Mahavir spent fourteen years of his life at Rajgir and Nalanda.
It was in Rajgriha that Lord Buddha delivered some of his famous
sermons and converted king Bimbisara of the Magasha Kingdom and
countless others to his creed. Once a great city, Rajgir is just
a village today, but vestiges of a legendary and historical past
remain, like the cyclopean wall that encircles the town and the
marks engraved in rock that local folklore ascribes to Lord Krishna's
chariot. This legend, like many others associates Rajgir to that
distant time when the stirring events recorded in the epic Mahabharata
were being enacted. Rajgir is located in a verdant valley surrounded
by rocky hills. Night stay in Bodhgaya.
DayY 04/ Bodhgaya - Varanasi
After an early breakfast, depart at 0800 HRS for Varanasi. Varanasi
is the world's most ancient living city. Sunrise on the riverfront,
as seen from a boat, can be spiritually uplifting sight. Crowded
with temples, and its labyrinth of streets, the city attracts
the maximum number of tourists. The religious capital of hinduism,
varanasi is the carpet manufacturing place of india. It was previously
known as kashi - the city that illuminates. The present name is
derived from the fact that the city is at the confluence of the
rivers varuna and asi. On arrival in Varanasi, check in at your
hotel. In the early part of the evening visit Sarnath, where you
can visit a museum which has artefacts from 300 - 400 BC and then
you can visit the Dhammek Stupa and finally attend the evening
prayers at the Sri Lankan Temple. Night stay in Varanasi.
Day 05/ Varanasi - Kushinagar
Early morning visit the sacred river Ganges before sunrise, to
see how the Hindus of Varanasi pray to the rising Sun and then
pray to the river Ganges. Enjoy a boat ride on the Ganges and
see the cremation grounds from the boat. Return to your hotel
for breakfast. Later visit the Golden Temple, Bharat Mata Temple
and Birla ( Shiva ) Temple. Later depart for Kushinagar &
transfer to hotel. Night stay in Kushinagar.
Day 06/ Kushinagar – Lumbini
Morning proceed for the sacred sites in Kushinagar. KUSHINAGAR
- The Buddha is believed to have breathed his last in this land
with pastoral surrounding, the small hamlet of Kushinagar, 53
km west of Gorakhpur. The land is venerated as the site of the
Buddha's Mahaparinirvana, his death and cremation, that marked
his final liberation from the cycles of death and rebirth. This
small town in the former kingdom of the Mallas was surrounded
by dense forest. It remained oblivous to the outside world until
it was rediscovered by the archaeologists in the nineteenth century.
The modern Indo-Japan-srilanka Buddhist centre, Kushinagar is
rediscovering its roots, and is home to many viharas, including
a Tibetan gompa devoted to Sakyamuni, a Burmese vihara, and temples
from China and Japan. Later depart for Lumbini & transfer
to hotel. Night stay in Lumbini.
Day
07/ Lumbini – Sravasti
Morning visit the birth place of Lumbini.The birthplace
of the Gautama Buddha, Lumbini, is the Mecca of every Buddhist,
being one of the four holy places of Buddhism. Buddha himself
identified four places of future pilgrimage: the sites of his
birth, enlightenment, first discourse, and death. Hence the birth
of Gautam Buddha makes it one of the most sacred places in the
world. The Sal tree where Siddhartha was born is difficult to
locate now. But Ashoka, in the 21st year of his reign visited
the forest and raised a pillar on the spot where Siddhartha was
born. Later depart for Sravasti enroute visit the sacred site
Kapilvastu . Arrive Sravasti & transfer to hotel. Night stay
in Sravasti.
Day 08/ Sravasti - Lucknow
Morning visit Sahet Mahet , Later depart for Lucknow & transfer
to hotel. Night stay in Luchnow.
Day 09/ Lucknow - Sankassia - Agra
After breakfast drive to Agra via Sankassia , a place where Buddha
along with Brahma & Devraj Indra descended after giving sermons
to his mother in heaven. At the spot of descent stands a temple
with a statue of the Buddha. Arrive Agra & transfer to hotel.
Night stay in Agra.
Day 10/ Agra – Delhi
Morning visit visit the magnificient Taj Mahal - Built by Shah
Jahan, the Taj is a white marble memorial to his beautiful wife
Mumtaz Mahal. This monument took 22 years to be completed and
was designed, and planned by Persian architect Ustad Isa. Apart
from its stunning design balance and perfect symmetry, the Taj
is also noted particularly for its elegant domes, intricately
carved screens and some of the best inlay work ever seen.
Also visit the Red fort - the rusty and majestic red- sandstone
fort of Agra stands on the banks of the river Yamuna and the construction
was started by Emperor Akbar in 1566. At the Diwan-I-Am (hall
of public audience),a colonnaded hall of red-sandstone with a
throne alcoveof inlaid marble at the back,the Emperor heard public
petitions. At the Diwan-I-Khas (hall of private audience) where
marble pavilions with floral inlays lend an ethereal ambience,
the Emperor sat on his gem-studded peacock Throne and met foreign
ambassadors and rulers of friendly kingdoms. Afternoon depart
to Delhi & transfer to hotel. Night stay in Delhi.
Day 11/ Delhi - Departure
After a leisurely breakfast sightseeing tourof Old & New Delhi.
OLD DELHI - A sight-seeing tour of Old Delhi would entail visiting
the Raj Ghat - the memorial site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated;
Jama Masjid - the largest mosque in India .
NEW DELHI - An extensive sight-seeing tour of New Delhi would
include a visit to the Humayun's Tomb, the Qutub Minar, a drive
along the ceremonial avenue - Rajpath, past the imposing India
Gate, Parliament House, the President's Residence and would end
with a drive through the Diplomatic Enclave. After dinner transfer
to airport for onward flight.
